First Strike - 1st 502nd - 101st Airborne

Arriving in Vietnam in December 1967 it was deployed in Long Bhin and the Cu Chi areas. During Tet of 1968 most of the unit had been moved north to the Quang Tri area. During Tet 1968, 3rd Platoon of C Co. assaulted the roof of the American Embasy in Saigon, while the rest of the unit operated arround Quant Tri along with the 1st Cav. During Tet 1968 the An Lo bridge was blown by the NVA above left. On  the right is the temporary one lane repair of the An Lo bridge as supplies were all shipped up Hwy 1 to Camp Evans, Quang Tri and Dong Ha to the North. Later in 1968 a new wood piling bridge was constructed using a steam pile driver.

Here is the An Lo Bridge in 2001. Thirty five years of flooding have washed away our wood piling bridge and the old French cement bunkers that would have been in this view on the bridge. To the right is what remains of the Church on the South end of Quang Tri where a large NVA bunker & tunnel complex was the site of an extended battle during Tet of 1968. Several members remember this battle and have commented that all kinds of mortar, artilary & air striks were called in on this Church. You can see its shell is still standing. The 2nd floor & walls were built like a bank vault.

Gentlemen,
I see alot of good pictures on this site that has been added. I would like to know if anybody has any problem with me saving the pictures and adding them to the STRIKE History page that we have on our Brigades portal, only individuals that have access to this portal are individuals that have a CAC (Military ID) Card and log onto the site. This is used for our history and also our weekly history that I send out to the units.

If anyone havs any question please let me know.

Thank you,

VA Extends “Agent Orange” Benefits to More Veterans

Parkinson’s Disease, Two Other Illnesses Recognized
WASHINGTON – Relying on an independent study by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki decided to establish a service-connection for Vietnam Veterans with three specific illnesses based on the latest evidence of an association with the herbicides referred to Agent Orange.
The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson’s disease; and ischemic heart disease.
Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and remove concealment for the enemy, Agent Orange left a legacy of suffering and disability that continues to the present. Between January 1965 and April 1970, an estimated 2.6 million military personnel who served in Vietnam were potentially exposed to sprayed Agent Orange.
In practical terms, Veterans who served in Vietnam during the war and who have a “presumed” illness don’t have to prove an association between their illnesses and their military service. This “presumption” simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits.
The Secretary’s decision brings to 15 the number of presumed illnesses recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
“We must do better reviews of illnesses that may be connected to service, and we will,” Shinseki added. “Veterans who endure health problems deserve timely decisions based on solid evidence.”
Other illnesses previously recognized under VA’s “presumption” rule as being caused by exposure to herbicides during the Vietnam War are:
• Acute and Subacute Transient Peripheral Neuropathy
• Chloracne
• Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
• Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2)
• Hodgkin’s Disease
• Multiple Myeloma
• Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
• Porphyria Cutanea Tarda
• Prostate Cancer
• Respiratory Cancers, and
• Soft Tissue Sarcoma (other than Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, or Mesothelioma)
Additional information about Agent Orange and VA’s services and programs for Veterans exposed to the chemical are available at www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange.

OK guys & gals. You may notice things look different here. The lost pictures of the An-Lo bridge in 2001 and the Church just south of Quang Tri have been reconnected.

The Guest book has been moved up to make it easier to drop us a line that will list the most recent post post on top.

Jerry Z (SKI) invested in a lot of work in copying many posts that dropped during the transfer from MSN Group to this site. Unfortunately the new site seemed to hide this valuable history. The Blog is now Mail Call and it has been tweaked to list the most historical postings.

The Photo Album now shows the most recent Album Posts, rather than taking up lots of space for all albums.

For those of you that have Facebook pages, I encourage you to link First Strike 1/502nd to your Facebook. I just did that and immediately received interest from several people who have come here and looked around. Perhaps we can connect with more of our brothers, families and friends.

Blessings
